Problema Solution
Suppose your car averages 30 miles per gallon on the highway if your average speed is 60 miles per hour and it averages 26 miles per gallon on the highway if your average speed is 75 miles per hour. (See Problem #76, Section 2A of the text for a similar problem.)
a) What is the driving time for a 1500-mile trip if you drive at an average speed of 60 miles per hour and what is the driving time at 75 miles per hour?
Answer provided by our tutors
let
d = 1500 mi the distance
v1 = 60 mph
v2 = 75 mph
we need to find the time of the trip t1 when the car is driving with a speed of v1 = 60 mph
since average speed = distance/time we have
v1 = d/t1
1500/t1 = 60
by solving we find:
t1 = 25 h

the driving time when you drive with an average speed of 60 mph is 25 hours.
in the same way we find the time t2 when driving with a speed of v2 = 75 mph
v2 = d/t2
1500/t2 = 75
by solving we find:
t2 = 20 h

the driving time when you drive with an average speed of 75 mph is 20 hours.
