Problema Solution
A zoo is filling 2 water tanks for elephant exhibits. one water tank contains 5 gallons of water and is filled at a constant rate of 10 gallons per hour. The second waster tank contains 29 gallons of water and is filled at a constant rate of 3 gallons per hour. When will the 2 tanks have the same amount of water? Solve by creating a system of equations
Answer provided by our tutors
let x represent the time needed for the 2 tanks to have the same amount of water
since the amount of water in gallon is equal to the rate*time we have:
the amount of water in the first tank after x hours = the amount of water in the second tank after x hours
5 + 10x = 29 + 3x
by solving we find:
x = 24/7
x = 3 3/7 hr
x = 3 hr (3/7)*60 min
x = 3 hr 26 min

after 3 hours and 26 minutes there will be the same amount of water in the two tanks.
