Problema Solution

a train leaves new oorleans at 2:00pm. A second train leaves the same city in the same direction at 7:00pm. The second train travels 70mph faster than the first. If THE SECOND TRAIN OVERTAKES THE FIRST AT 10:00PM what is the speed of each of the two trains

Answer provided by our tutors

the first train will travel 7 - 2 = 5 hours (there are 5 hours between 2 pm and 7 pm) more than the second

since the second train overtakes the first at 10 pm the total time of the travel of the first train is: 5 + 3 = 8 hours

the time of the travel of the second train is 10 - 7 = 3 hours (there are 3 hours between 7 pm and 10 pm)

let

v = the speed of the first train

v + 70 = the speed of the second train

both trains travel the same distance and we know that distance = speed*time thus:

8*v = 3(v + 70)

by solving we find:

v = 42 mph

v + 70 = 42 + 70 = 112 mph

the speed of the first train is 42 mph.

the speed of the second train is 112 mph.
