The problem is when you try to count the $3 left IN ADDITION to the money your parents lent you, when in fact it is part of the money your parents lent you.
You spent $45 on shoes
You gave $2 to your parents so you owe them $48 now
You have $3 left. These $3 are already calculated in the $48 you owe your parents so that is why you should not add them to the $48 to get $51.
