Problema Solution
a plane takes as long to fly 480 miles with the wind as to fly 400 miles against the wind. The wind speed is 30 miles per hour. find the speed of the plane with out a wind.
Answer provided by our tutors
let
v = the speed of the plane in still air, v>0
w = 30 mph the speed of the wind
traveling with the wind the speed of the plane is: v + w
traveling against the wind the speed of the plane is: v - w
since speed = distance/time follows time = distance/speed:
480/(v + w) = 400/(v - w)
480/(v + 30) = 400/(v - 30)
by solving we find:
v = 330 mph
