Problema Solution
At 7am I leave for school which is 30 miles away at 7:15am I am 18 miles away. Write an equation in slope intercept form to model this situation and then find the distance I am away from the school after 25 minutes
Answer provided by our tutors
The equations in the "slope-intercept" form is
y = mx + b
where m and b are constants ("m" is the slope and "b" gives the y-intercept)
y = the distance from school
x = the time in minutes
at 7 am we have:
x = 0
y = 30
30 = m*0 + b
b = 30
at 7:15 am i am 18 miles away:
x = 15 min
y = 18 mi
18 = m*15 + 30
by solving we find:
m = -0.8

the equation is:
y = - 0.8x + 30
for x = 25 min we have
y = - 0.8*30 + 30
y = 6 mi
after 25 minutes the distance away from school is 6 miles.
