Problema Solution
A west bond cyclist bikes at 9mph faster than the east bond cyclist. After four hours they are 108 miles apart. How far is each cyclist riding?
Answer provided by our tutors
If x is the speed of the east bond cyclist, then the speed of the west bond cyclist os x+9
In 4 hours they cover the distance of 4x and 4(x+9) respectively. Since they're moving in the opposite directions, the distance between then is
4x+4(x+9) = 108
4x+4x+36 = 108
8x+36 = 108
8x=72
x=9
The speed of the second cyclist is 9+9=18 mph
In four hours they travel 4*9 = 36 miles for the eastbound cyclist and 4*18 = 72 miles for the west bound one
