Problema Solution

Marcus and Diego started bicycling north at 9 a.m. at an average speed of 16 mph. After two hours,, Marcus turned around and headed back home while Diego continued on. Assuming no change in speed, how far apart were they at noon?

Drawing a diagram they both go north for two hours and distance is 32 after that Diego goes 48 miles but Marcus reverses his direction so he goes south 16 miles. their difference should be 48-16= 32 miles but how do I write the equation?

from 9 am till noon there are 3 hours

for 2 hours Marcus and Diego were bicycling together with the same average a speed of 16 mph

the last 1 hour each of them bicycles in opposite direction thus the after 1 hour the distance between them will be:

1*16 + 1*16 = 32 miles (since distance = time*speed).
