Problema Solution

The speed of a passenger train is 12 MPH faster than the freight train. The passenger train travels 300 miles in the same time it takes the freight train to travel 240 miles. Find the speed of each train.

Answer provided by our tutors

let

v = the speed of the freight train, v>0

d1 = 240 mi the distance traveled by the freight train

v + 12 = the speed of the passenger train (12 mph faster than the freight train)

d2 = 300 mi the distance traveled by the passenger train

since speed = distance/time follows time = distance/speed

d1/v = d2/(v + 12)

240/v = 300/(v + 12)

by solving we find:

v = 48 mph

48 + 12 = 60 mph

the seed of the freight train is 48 mph while the speed of the passenger train is 60 mph.
