Problema Solution

Two isosceles triangles have equal vertical angles and their corresponding sides are in the ratio of 3 : 7. What is the ratio of the areas?

Answer provided by our tutors

for the first triangle we can write:

3x = the length of the side

3h = the height corresponding the the side

the area of the first triangle is:

A1 = (1/2) 3x*3h

A1 = (1/2)*9*xh

for the second triangle now we have:

7x = the length of the side

7h = the height corresponding the the side

the area of the second triangle is:

A2 = (1/2)*7x*7h

A2 = (1/2)*49*xh

A1 : A2 = ((1/2)*9*xh) : ((1/2)*49*xh) = 9 : 49

the ratio of the areas is 9 : 49.
