Problema Solution

Daffany and her friends are in a drama production. At the beginning of the show, she and the others line up behind Augie, march on stage , and then peel off from a marching circle until one person is left. Actually, every other person starting with the lead person peels off. As they peel off from the marching circle, they form a line from left to right across the stage. The final order is supposed to be Augie, Beatrice, Corrine, Daffany, Estefan, Fiona, Gwendolyn, Heather,Llana, Jackie, Kent, and Lorena. In what order do they need to line up originally?

Answer provided by our tutors

Draw a circle made of 12 points (for the 12 kids). Don't label them yet. Instead, elsewhere on the paper, write their names, or just the letters since they're named in sequence, example: "A B C D E F G H I J K L"

That line of letters is where you have ended up. Now you will "work backwards". Pick a point (maybe the top on your circle) and label it "A". Then skip one, label "B", skip one, label "C", etc.

**The important thing to remember is that you are skipping the POINTS, not the letters. In other words, once you get to "F", you will have a point, then "A", then another point. Skip the first point, and label the one AFTER "A" with your "G". Keep doing this--skip one point, label the next--until you have filled out your circle.

Then all you need to do is follow your circle from "A", the leader, around in the direction you labelled, and you will have their original order:

1. Augie

2. Gwen

3. Beatrice

4. Jackie

5. Corinne

6. Heather

7. Daffany

8. Lorena

9. Estefan

10. Illana

11. Fiona

12. Kent
