Problema Solution

NASA has found a planet in a far away galaxy,and has obtained a scaled photos using Hubble telescope. The circumference of the planet is unknown, although the diameter in the picture is 3.62 inches. In the same picture, there is a star with radius 37.41 inches. We know the actual circumference of the star is 3 million miles, what would be the circumference of the planet.

Answer provided by our tutors

let

d1 = 3.62 in the diameter of the planet on the picture

r1 = d1/2 = 3.62/2 = 1.81 in is the radius of the planet on the picture

C1 = the circumference of the planet

r2 = 37.41 in the radius of the star

C2 = 3*10^6 mi is the circumference of the star

r1 : r2 = C1 : C2

1.81 : 37.41 = C1 : 3*10^6

by solving we find:

C1 = 145,148.356 mi
