Problema Solution
motorist x and motorist y star their journey at the same time traveling in the same direction. In 4 hour time X will travel 88 km less than Y. If X increase his speed by 12 km/h his new speed will be 6/7 of the original travelling speed of y. Find the travelling speed of each motorist. Assume that their travelling speed are constant
Answer provided by our tutors
let
v1 = the speed of X
v2 = the speed of Y
t = 4 hr
since speed = distance/time follows distance = speed*time
In 4 hour time X will travel 88 km less than Y:
v1*t = v2*t - 88
4v1 = 4v2 - 88 divide both sides by 4
v1 = v2 - 22
If X increase his speed by 12 km/h his new speed will be 6 fraction 7 of the original travelling speed of y:
v1 + 12 = (6/7)v2
by solving the system of equations:
v1 = v2 - 22
v1 + 12 = (6/7)v2
we find:
v1 = 48 km/h
v2 = 70 km/h

the traveling speed of motorcycle X is 48 km/h.
the traveling speed of motorcycle Y is 70 km/h.
