Problema Solution

Jack's golf bag has 3 rows each with 4 slots in which to put his 12 iron clubs. The putter is number 0 and the other clubs are numbered from 1 to 11. He wants the numbers in each row to add up to the same number. He puts number 5 and 11 in the first row, 4 and 10 in the second row, and 9 and 8 in the third row. What two other clubs should go in the third row?

Answer provided by our tutors

He puts number 5 and 11 in the first row: 5 + 11 = 16

4 and 10 in the second row: 4 + 10 = 14

9 and 8 in the third row: 9 + 8 = 17

the left cubs to add are with numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7

if we add 2 and 3 to the third row we get:

9 + 8 + 2 = 3 = 22

we add 7 and 1 to the second row:

4 + 14 + 1 + 7 = 22

we add 6 and 0 to the first row:

5 + 11 + 6 + 0 = 22

the solution is: 2 and 3 should go in the third row.
