Problema Solution

Tom increased the area of his garden by 165 ft^2. The rectangular garden was originally 16 feet by 12 feet and he increased the length and width by the same amount. Find the dimensions of the garden now.

Answer provided by our tutors

let

x = amount of increase in each, length and width, x>0

l = 16 ft the old length

w = 12 ft the old width

l + x = 16 + x the new length

w + x = 12 + x the new width

Tom increased the area of his garden by 165 ft^2:

l*w + 165 = (16 + x)(12 + x)

16*12 + 165 = (16 + x)(12 + x)

by solving we find:

x = 5 ft
