Problema Solution
A car traveling 50 mph goes 15 miles farther in the same amount of time as a car traveling 30 mph. Find the distance that each car has traveled. (hint: d=rt)
Answer provided by our tutors
let
t = the time of the travel
r1 = 50 mph the rate of the first car
r2 = 30 mph the rate of the second car
d1 = the distance of the first car
d2 = the distance of the second car
d1 = d2 + 15
and also we know that d1 = r1*t and d2 = r2*t
r1*t = r2*t + 15
50t = 30t + 15
by solving we find:
t = 0.75 hr
click here to see the step by step solution of the equation:
d1 = 50*0.75
d1 = 37.5 mi
d2 = 30*0.75
d2 = 22.5 mi
the distance the first car traveled is 37.5 miles.
the distance the second car traveled is 22.5 miles.
