Problema Solution
Two hikers are 12 miles apart walking towards each other. They meet in 2 hours. Find the rate of each hiker if one hiker walks 1.8 mph faster than the other.
Answer provided by our tutors
let
v = the rate of the slower hiker
v + 1.8 = the rate of the faster hiker
t = 2 hr the time of the walk
d = 12 mi the distance between the hikers
since distance = speed*time and they are walking towards each other we have:
the distance walked by the first hiker + the distance walked by the second hiker = the distance between the hikers
vt + (v + 1.8)t = 12
2v + (v + 1.8)*2 = 12
by solving we find:
v = 2.1 mph
click here to see the step by step solution of the equation:
v + 1.8 = 2.1 + 1.8 = 3.9 mph
the rate of the slower hiker is 1.8 mph.
the rate of the faster hiker is 3.9 mph.
