Problema Solution

Studies show that college students are taking longer to graduate from college. the coordinates show that less students are graduating in less than five years. In 1983, the coordinates representing a line of students graduating in less than 5 years were (0,58). Where x represents the year in 983 and y represents the percent graduating in less than five years. The next coordinate shows fourteen years later, in 1997, as follows; (14,53). Find an equation of the line given the coordinate.

There was 14 year span used to determine the equation of the line. In 1990, what percentage of college students graduated in less than 5 years?

Answer provided by our tutors

We need to find the equation of a line going trough (0, 58) and (14, 53):

y - 58 = (53 - 58)/(14 - 0)(x - 0)

........

y = (-5/14)x + (812/14)

y = (-5/14)x + 58

For the year 1990 we have x = 7 and we need to find y:

y = (-5/14)*7 + 58

y = 55.5%
