Problema Solution
Two sreetcars are 11 miles apart and traveling toward each other on parallel tracks. They meet in 12 minutes. Find the speed of each streetcar if one travels 15 miles per hour faster than the other.
Answer provided by our tutors
Let
v = the speed of the slower car, v>0
v + 15 = the speed of the faster car
t = 12 min
t = 12/60 hr
t = 1/5 hr
d = 11 mi
Since distance = speed*time we have:
v*t + (v + 15)*t = d
(1/5)v + (1/5)(v + 15) = 11
........
........
v = 20 mph
v + 15 = 20 + 15 = 35 mph
The speed of the slower car is 20 mph.
The speed of the faster car is 35 mph.
