Problema Solution

Suppose that Javier has a handful of coins, consisting of pennies, nickels, and dimes, worth $2.63. The number of nickels is 1 less than twice the number of pennies, and the number of dimes is 3 more than the number of nickels. How many coins of each kind does he have?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let x be the number of pennies.

"The number of nickels is 1 less than twice the number of pennies"

means the number of nickels is 2x - 1.

"the number of dimes is 3 more than the number of nickels"

means the number of dimes is 2x - 1 + 3 = 2x + 2.

They worth 2.63 so

x + 5(2x-1) + 10(2x+2) = 263

x  + 10x-5 + 20x+20 = 263

31x + 15 = 263

31x = 248

x = 8
