Problema Solution

Two trucks leave a wharehouse at the same time, traveling in opposite directions. The rate of the faster truck exceeds that of the slower truck by 9 miles per hour. After 2 hours, they are 192 miles apart. What are the rates of the trucks?

Faster: Rate x time= Distance

x+9 2 =

x 2 =

The rate of the slower truck is ___ miles per hour.

The rate of the faster truck is ___ miles per hour.

Answer provided by our tutors

If the rate of the slower truck is x, and the rate of the faster truck is x + 9, then

Faster: Rate x time = Distance

(x+9)2 = 2x + 18

Slower: Rate x time = Distance

x(2) = 2x

After 2 hours they are 192 miles apart:

2x + (2x + 18) = 192

4x + 18 = 192

x = 43.5 mph

x + 9 = 52.5 mph

The rate of the slower truck is 43.5 miles per hour.

The rate of the faster truck is 52.5 miles per hour.
