Problema Solution

A collection of dimes and quarters are retrieved from a soft drink machine. There are five times of as many dimes a quarters and the total value of the coin is $27.75. Find the number of dimes and the number of quarters.

Answer provided by our tutors

The easiest way is set up an equation. Dimes are $.10 and quarters are $.25. So, a combination of these has to add up to $27.75. So far we know (.10)x+(.25)y=$27.75

Now we also know there are five times as many dimes as quarters. So x (number of dimes) = 5y (y=number of quarters)

So if x=5y then plug in 5y for x in your original equation

(.10)5y+(.25)y=$27.75

Now solve and y (number of quarters) is 37.

Almost done: now that you know the number of quarters, and there are five times more dimes than quarters, then 5(37)=185

So 37 quarters and 185 dimes.
