Problema Solution

the area of a rectangular swimming pool is given by 2x^2-5x-3 ft^2 one side lengh of the pool is given by 2x+1 feet what is an algebraic expression for the other side length of the pool simplify and include correct units

To find the other side length, you need to divide the area by the given side length.

2x^2 - 5x - 3 divided by 2x + 1]

You can use polynomial long division.  Or you can try to fill in the blanks by guessing and checking in the binomial multiplication as such:

(2x+1)(__ - __) = 2x^2 - 5x - 3

When you multiply the first terms together, you want to get 2x^2.  When you multiply the last terms together you want to get -3.

So it would be (2x+1)(x-3).

x-3 is an expression for the other length.
