In order to function properly two parts must be assembled at correct angles. The two angles are complementary and one angle must be 18 degrees larger than the other. Determine the number of degrees of each angle.

complementary is another name for a 90 degree angle
one angle + (one angle + 18 degrees) = a complementary angle
x + (x+18) = 90 the first equation
x + x + 18 = 90 distribute
2x + 18 = 90 add like terms together (in this case the x's)
2x = 72 subtract 18 from both sides
x = 36 divide both sides by 2
