Problema Solution

find an equation for the line with the given properties. Express your answer using either the general form or the slope-intercept form of the equation of a line, whichever you prefer.

Containing the points (−3, 4) and (2, 5)

Answer provided by our tutors

It's hard to read what the first point is.

If the points are (3,4) and (2,5):

first find the slope: m = change in y/change in x

= (5-4)/(2-3) = 1/-1 = -1

use either point and the equation y = mx + b to solve for b

y = -x+b

use the point (2,5)

5 = -2+b

7 = b

so the equation would be:

y = -x+7

If the points are (-3,4) and (2,5):

first find the slope: m = change in y/change in x

= (5-4)/(2-(-3)) = 1/5

use either point and the equation y = mx + b to solve for b

y = (1/5)x+b

use the point (2,5)

5 = (1/5)*2 + b

5 = (2/5) + b

4.6 = b

so the equation would be:

y = (x/5) + 4.6 or

y = .2x + 4.6 would be the same thing
