Problema Solution
A pilot flew from an airport to another against a headwind of 20 miles per hour. The flight took 2 hours. He returned with a tailwind of 20 miles per hour in 1.8 hours. What distance did he fly and what was his airspeed?
Answer provided by our tutors
Use formula distance = speed x time to solve this problem.
Distance between airports = D. Airspeed = v
D = (v-20)*2
D = (v+20)*1.8
Solve for v: 2v - 40 = 1.8v + 36 so 0.2v = 76 so v = 380 mph
D = (380-20)*2 = 720 miles
