Problema Solution
a company manufactures diskettes for home computers. it from experience that the number of diskettes it can sell each day, x , is related to the price p per diskettes by the equation x=1,700-100p. at what price should the company sell the diskettes if it wants the daily revenue to be $1,200?
Answer provided by our tutors
the revenue would bet he number of diskettes times the price of each, or x*p
set this equal to 1200
1200 = xp
now substitute the given equation in for x to solve for p
1200 = (1700-100p)*p
1200 = 1700p - 100p2
100p2-1700p+1200 = 0
100(p2-17+12) = 0
use the quadratic formula to solve for p
a = 1, b = -17, c = 12
p = -b +/- sqrt(b2-4ac) / 2a
p = 17 +/- sqrt(289-48) / 2
p = 17 +/- sqrt(241) / 2
p = 17 +/- 15.52 / 2
p = 16.26 or p = .74
check these both into the original equations
x = 74 or x = 1626
xp = 74*16.26 = 1203.4 which is more than 1200, so this works
or xp = 1626*.74 = 1203.4, which is more than 1200, so this also works
the company can either sell 74 diskettes at $16.26 each or they can sell 1626 diskettes at $00.74 each to earn a revenue of $1200
