The age of a man is ten years more than three times his sister’s age. Find the age of each if five years from now he will be 4 years more than twice his sister’s age.

Answer provided by our tutors

Let x= the sisters age now, and x+5 be the sisters age 5 years from now.

Then we can derive the mans age as the following:

3x+10 (current age)

3x+10+5 = 3x+15 (Age 5 years from now)

Based off of what we are told we can see the following

3x+15=2(x+5)+4

3x+15=2x+10+4

If we solve for x we get -1, which is not possible. (You obviously cannot have negative ages)

Therefore we must simply conclde that in 5 years the sister will be x+5 years old and the man will be 3(x+5) years old.
