The difference between two numbers is 16. Three times the larger number is nine times the smaller. What are the numbers?

Let the 2 numbers be x and y such that x > y
now we have,
x - y =16
3x = 9y
hence, x = 3y
now putting it in x-y=16 we have,
3y -y = 16, 2y = 16
y = 8 and x = 24
