A manufacturer of television sets received an order for sets with a 46-inch screen (measured along te diagonal). If the screens are to be rectangular in shape and 17 1/2 inches wider than they are high, find the dimensions of the screen to the nearest tenth of an inch.

Let l be the length and b be the breadth
Hence,
l^2 + b^2 = 46^2
we also know that,
b =l + 17.5
so now we get,
l^2 + (l + 17.5)^2 = 46^2
l^2 + l^2 + 35l + 17.5^2 = 46^2
2l^2 + 35l - 1809.75 = 0
hence, l = 22.5 inches
b = 40 inches
