Problema Solution

Paul bought one ball for each boy and one top for each girl in his class. He paid $311 to buy these items for the 20 children. The price of a ball is $15 and a top costs $16.How many boys and how many girls are in his class?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let the number of boys be x

Number of girls will be 20 - x (because total is 20 and boys are x)

Total number of balls will be equal to total number of boys. Total price of balls=

Total number of balls * price of each ball

x * 15

Total number of top will be equal to total number of girls. total price of top=

Total number of tops * price of each top

(20 - x) * 16

Hence total price= 15*x    +   (20-x) * 16  = 311

15x + 320 - 16x = 311

-x + 320 = 311

x=9

Hence number of boys = x = 9 <-- Answer

Number of girls = 20 -x = 20-9 = 11<-- Answer
