Problema Solution

I known you have 3 unknowns you need 3 equations to solve but how far can you solve with only two equations.

Here is a problem with three unknowns but only two equations. Can it be solved anyway?

100 men, women, and children attend a theater. 100 dollars in revenue is taken in by the theater. Men's tickets are $5.00 ea, women's tickets are $2.00 ea, and children's tickets are 10 cents ea. How many men, how many women, and how many children attended the theater?

Answer provided by our tutors

m +w + c =100

5m + 2w + .1c = 100 because 1$ = 100 cents

multiply equation 1 by 2 we get

2m + 2w + 2c = 200

5m + 2w +.1c =100

solving above 2:

3m -1.9c = -100

(100 - 1.9c) /3 = m

now m must be integer :

hence c can be : 10 or 40

if c is 10 , m will be 27 which is not possible coz it exceeds revenue 100.

hence c is 40, m will be 8 and w will be 28.
