The side of an equilateral triangle is 4 inches shorter than the side of a square. The perimeter of the square is 42 inches more than the permimeter of the triangle. Find the length of a side of the square.

Solution:

st = ss - 4

4ss = 3st + 42

4ss  = 3(ss-4) + 42

4ss = 3ss - 12 + 42

ss = 30 inches
