A 40 foot beam is to be cut in two, if one portion is one third the length of the other portion. what are the two lengths of the portion?

let the length of smaller part=L
Length of second part=3L
Total length= L+3L=40 feet
So 4L=40 or L= 40/4=10 feet
Lenght of one part is 10 feet and second part is 3L=30 feet
