Problema Solution

Ellen and kate rode their bicycles to the library after school. They both left at 3:00 P.M. and bicycled along the same path. Ellen rode at a speed of 12 miles per hour and kate rode at 9 miles per hour. Ellen got to the library 15 minutes before kate. At what time did ellen get to the library?

Answer provided by our tutors

Ellen traveled 12(t-1/4) miles.

Kate traveled the same distance but at a slower rate, 9t miles.

Since the distances are the same, we have . 12 *(t-1/4)=9t

  t=1

This means Ellen arrived 15 minutes earlier than Kate or in 45 minutes.

So, Ellen got to the library at 3:45 and Kate at 4:00. Kate arrived in 1 hour or at 4:00.
