Problema Solution

The number of students attending an eastern university at one time was 3,000 more than the number attending a western university, and 1/2 the number in the eastern university plus 1/3 the number in the western university equaled 6,500. How many were attending each university?

Answer provided by our tutors

The number of students attending an eastern university: (x+3000)

The number of students attending an western university: x

So

(x+3000)/2 + x/3 = 6500

So

x = 6000

So

The number of students attending an eastern university: 9000

The number of students attending an western university: 6000
