Problema Solution
The width of a rectangle is 6 kilometers less than twice its length. If the area of the rectangle is 56 square kilometers, find the dimensions of the rectangle.
Answer provided by our tutors
Let length of the rectangle be x and width be y
Given y=2x-6 eq(1)
and area of rectangle is 56 square kilometres
xy=56 eq(2)
solving equations 1 and 2 we get (2x-6)x=56
2x2-6x-56=0
x2-3x-28=0
x=7,-4
As length cannot be negative x=7
y=2*7-6=8
The rectangle has dimensions length=7 km and width=8km
