Problema Solution

Joy is an instructional assistant in one of the college labs. She is on a very tight budget. She loves Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, but it costs $18 a pound. She decides to blend this with regular coffee beans that costs $1.88 a pound. If she spends $14.25 on 3 pounds of coffee, how many pounds of each did she purchase?

Answer provided by our tutors

If she mixed x pound of mountain coffee with y pound of regular

then  x+y = 3 (3 pound of mixture)

The cost is =  x*18 + 1.88*y = $14.25 (one pound mountain costs 18 and one pound of regular costs 1.88).

putting x = 3-y in second equation

we get    (3-y)*18 + 1.88y = 14.25

this given us y = regular = 2.67

and x = mountain = .53
