Problema Solution

A red car leaves NYC going north at 11:00am. A blue car leaves Albany going south at 1:00pm going 10 mph slower than twice the speed of the red car. The distance between the two cities is 220 miles. If the two cars meet at 3:00pm, how fast was the red car going?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let the speed of the red car be x

Blue car tavles 10mph slower than twice speed of red car

So speed of blue car = 2x - 10

The cars meet at 3 pm.

So, time for which the red car travelled = 4 hours

time for the blue car = 2 hours

Distance for red car = speed x time = 4x

Distance for blue car = speed x time = 2(2x-10) = 4x - 20

Now it is said that distance between 2 cities = 220 miles

so

4x + 4x - 20 = 220

8x - 20 = 220

8x = 240

x= 30

So red car was going at 30mph.
