Problema Solution
A triangle has base 12 centimeters more than its width. How much do you have to increase each dimension equally so that the area is tripled.
Answer provided by our tutors
Area = 1/2 x Base x Perpendicular Height
Previous Area = 1/2 x 8 x 12 = 48cm2
New Are = 48 x 3 = 144cm2
If dimension incresement is a
Base = (a+12) and Height = (a+8)
New Area = 1/2 x (a+12) x (a+8)
48 x 3 = (a+12)(a+8)/2
(a+12)(a+8) = 288
a2 + 20a -192 = 0
Found the answers using quadratic formula
The solution of a are - 27.085 and 7.085
But a > 0
a = 7.085cm is more suitable (Dimension increasement can be considered as 7cm)
