the houlihans paytheir babysitter $5 per hour before 11pm and 7.50 per hour after 11pm. one evening they went out for 5 hours and paid the sitter $30. what time did they come home?

Guess and check to find
X=3 y=2 where x is before 11 and y is after 11. Since y is 2 then he got payed for 2 hours after 11 therefor the answer is 1 am.
