Problema Solution

Michael purchased a certain number of shares of one stock for a toal of 1530 dollars. The second stock was selling for 4 dollars less per share.Michael could have bought 6 more shares of the second stock for the same amount of money. How many shares of the first stock did michael purchase? How much did each share cost?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let 'x' represent the cost per share that Michael purchased and let 'y' represent the number of shares Michael purchased.  If he had purchased stocks costing x-4 shares for y+6 shares then it would also have cost 1530 dollars:

xy=1530

(x-4)(y+6)=1530

click here to solve the system of equations

x=34

y=45

So Michael had purchased 34 shares at 45 dollars per share.
