Problema Solution
Silas would like to enlarge his rectangular front yard which is currently 80 feet by 40 feet. He can only extend the width and length by 5x feet. If x = 7 feet, what will be the increase in area of the front yard?
Answer provided by our tutors
The current dimensions of the yard are: 80 feet by 40 feet
The current area is: 80*40 ft^2
The new dimensions of the yard are: 80 + 5x and 40 + 5x
The new area is: (80 + 5x)*(40 + 5x)
We get the increase in area bu subtracting the current area from the new area:
(80 + 5x)*(40 + 5x) - 80*40 = 25x^2 + 600x

For x = 7 ft we get:
25*7^2 + 600*7 = 5,425 ft^2
The increase in area of the front yard will be 5,425 ft^2.
