Problema Solution

Suppose two people begin walking in the same direction at different average speeds. Walker A starts at the 0.5-meter mark and walks at a speed of 1 m/s. Walker B starts at the 2-meter mark and walks at a speed of 0.5 m/s. When and where will Walker A pass Walker B?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

v1 = 1 m/s the speed of walker A

v2 = 0.5 m/s the speed of walker B

t = the time of the walk

Since distance = speed*time we have:

0.5 + v1t = 2 + v2t

0.5 + 1*t = 2 + 0.5t

........

t = 3 s

0.5 + 1*3 = 3.5 m

Walker A will pass Walker B after 3 seconds.

Walker A will pass Walker B after 3.5 meters.
