Problema Solution

Tatsu works in an amusement park and is helping decorate it with strands of lights. This morning, he used a total of 45 strands of lights to decorate 5 bushes and 2 trees. This afternoon, he strung lights on 1 bush and 5 trees, using a total of 55 strands. Assuming that all bushes are decorated one way and all trees are decorated another, how many strands did Tatsu use on each?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

b = the number of strands used on each bush

t = the number of strands used on each tree

He used a total of 45 strands of lights to decorate 5 bushes and 2 trees:

5b + 2t = 45

He strung lights on 1 bush and 5 trees, using a total of 55 strands:

b + 5t = 55

We have the following system of equations:

5b + 2t = 45

b + 5t = 55

........

b = 5 strands

t = 10 strands

Tatsu used 5 strands on each bush and 10 strands on each tree.
