Problema Solution

The distance from the earth to the sun is about 1.5x10^8 km, while the distance from the earth to the moon is about 3.8x10^5 km. If a scale model of the solar system is constructed so that the distance from the earth to the sun is 100 meters, what will be the distance from the earth to the moon?

Let 'x' represent the distance from Earth to Moon on the scale model.

1 km = 1000 m

100 m = 1/10 km

100 m = 0.1 km

1.5x10^8 : 3.8x10^5 = 0.1 : x

........

x = 0.000153 km

x = 0.000153*1000 km

x = 0.153 m

The distance from the Earth to the Moon on the scale model will be 0.153 meters or 15.3 cm.
