Problema Solution

The following rational function describes concentration in blood of a certain medicine taken once depending on time, find

a. The horizontal or oblique asymptotes(s), if any,

b. The vertical asymptote(s), if any

c. Describe their possible meanings.

F(x) = 4/x+2

Answer provided by our tutors

a. Horizontal asymptote

y = b It is a horizontal asymptote when: as x goes to infinity (or to -infinity) the curve approaches some fixed constant value "b".

In our case we have:

F(x) = 4/x+2

If x goes to infinity y approaches to 2 and y = 2 is the horizontal asymptote.

b. Vertical asymptote

Vertical asymptotes are vertical lines which correspond to the zeroes of the denominator of a real function.

The zero of the denominator is x = 0 thus the vertical asymptote is x = 0.
