Problema Solution

The lead bike is traveling at a rate of 12 mph, the next bike is 3mph behind and is traveling at a rate of 18mph how long will it take the second bike to catch up to the lead bike?

Answer provided by our tutors

v1 = 12 mph the rate of the first bike

v2 = 18 mph the rate of the second bike

t = the time of the travel

3 mi = the distance between the bikes

since distance = speed*time we have:

v1*t + 3 = v2*t

12t + 3 = 18t

........

t = 0.5 hr

t = 30 min

The second bike will catch up to the lead bike in 30 minutes.
