Problema Solution

The length of a rectangle is 4 feet more than the width. If the area of the rectangle is 136 ft^2 what are the dimensions of the rectangle?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let 'x' represent the width, then 'x+4' represents the length.  The area is equal to length time width.

136=x(x+4)

click here to solve for x

x=9.832

9.832+4=13.832

So the width is approximately 9.8 feet and the length is approximately 13.8 feet.  This type of question will result in an integer answer, so perhaps the problem statement is in error (140 ft^2 would be a width of 10 feet and a length of 14 feet).
