Problema Solution

The length the two shorter sides of an isosceles triangular lot are each 11feet less than twice the length of the longest side. The perimeter of the lot is 233 feet. Find the length of each side.

Answer provided by our tutors

Let 'x' represent the length of the longest side.

Then the length of each of the shorter sides is: 2x - 11.

The perimeter is 233 means:

x + 2(2x - 11) = 233

........

x = 51 ft

2*51 - 11 = 102 - 11 = 91 ft

The means the length of the sides are 51 ft and the two equal sides are 91 ft.

However, since 51 < 91, the side with length 51 ft is not the longest. This means that there is no such isosceles triangle.
